What Is a Rubber
Safety Surface?

View Portfolio

A rubber safety surface is a soft and flexible impact absorbing surface that is commonly used in children’s playground surfaces, swimming pools and gyms. It can also be found in laser centres, foot paths as well as sports fields.

A rubber safety surface is strong enough to support the heaviest of weights, but soft enough that children won’t injure themselves when falling on it. It is available in a wide range of colours and can be laid in a variety of styles to reflect your school or organisation.

This kind of surface can be installed directly onto any solid sub-base such as tarmac, concrete or paving slabs. When the wet pour rubber surface has been laid, it will be bound together with a polyurethane resin, which will ensure the surface is both robust and strong.

If you are constructing a children’s play area, we can add educational games and equipment to create an interactive playground surface. We can also assist you in identifying the right depth of rubber to maximise impact absorbency.

Why Choose a Rubber Safety Surface?

Reduces Injuries

Rubber safety surfaces are slip-resistant making them ideal for swimming pools and other areas with young children. They also have excellent shock absorption properties and will can lay a surface to stay in line with all CFH (critical fall height) and BS EN 1177 standards. Just 80mm of poured rubber will allow a child to fall safely from 2 metres.

Fully Customisable

Rubber safety surfaces can be installed in a wide range of different colours and designs. Special graphics can also be inserted to create an interesting and exciting floor, whilst deeper rubber can be poured in certain areas if you are installing play equipment.

The Process

Installing a rubber safety surface begins with excavation to create a finished surface level. A sub base is then poured. If you already have a hard standing sub-base, the wet rubber can be poured directly on to it to save money. The DGR Surfaces team will then lay a cushioned layer before adding the final top layer which will contain your custom shapes and designs (if you have any).
